Joelle Mercedes: Pensaba Que El Mundo Se Te Iba Derrumbar Encima

The Nightingale Cinema is thrilled to present an experiential program of short works by Nightingale-in-Residence Fall 2021 artist Joelle Mercedes. Pensaba Que El Mundo Se Te Iba Derrumbar Encima is a program composed of three parts: a screening of new short films, a participatory drawing exercise, and a reading of original texts. The night is loosely structured under the following questions: Where do the cavities on a tree lead us to? How does a plastic tablecloth help communicate the vibrations of a spirit? What happens when a bird bites off your head? In considering these questions Joelle uses 16mm film, experimental sound, and language to investigate the world of birds.

About the Artist

Joelle Mercedes is an artist and educator working in collage techniques that unsettle the restrictions of the two dimensional frame, examining and stretching origin, impermanence, and history. Their work has been presented in various forms at: KW Institute for Contemporary Art (Berlin, DE), TrueQué Residencia (Ayampe, EC), California Institute of the Arts (Valencia, CA), Lynden Sculpture Garden Gallery (Milwaukee), Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Hyde Park Art Center, Sullivan Galleries (Chicago).
