Danny Carroll: The Trajectory of the Pendulum

Nightingale Cinema welcomes Chicago-based filmmaker Danny Carroll to screen six video works made from 2016-2021. Danny’s works bounce between perspectives of camera and character, while skillfully achieving filmscapes of heightened anxiety. This anxiety isn’t one based in fear, but built within the push and pull between curiosity and empathy. Unseen, yet felt, like a magnetic field, the tension in Danny’s work is often reminiscent of master filmmakers like Jane Campion, Claire Denis, or Michael Haneke, but created for experimental film and video audiences. Between fiction, performance, and video essay, Danny’s work explores themes of domesticity, nature, theatrics, and the various roles of the filmmaker.

About the artist:

Danny is a Chicago-based filmmaker. His recent work has been screened at Iceberg Projects, Gallery 400, The Nightingale, Filmfront, Flatland, Onion City Film Festival, Spectral Film Festival, and the Chicago International Film Festival.

Danny has a BFA in Visual Art from Parsons the New School for Design (2013), and an MFA in Moving Image from the University of Illinois at Chicago (2019). He has also completed residencies at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2014), and Lazuli Residency (2018).
