Fall 2021 Nightingale-in-Residence
Apply to the Nightingale-in-Residence Program for October-December 2021!
The Nightingale is excited to offer a low-cost studio lease and residency program for Chicago-area artists. Through the months of October-December 2021, a resident artist will utilize a bedroom at the Nightingale as a studio space for making film, video, media, sound, writing, curatorial projects, or other digital artworks. The Nightingale was founded in 2008 due to the lack of moving image-focused exhibition spaces available to makers in the city, and we hope that the Nightingale-in-Residence program can further fill a gap in moving image-focused studio residency opportunities in Chicago and the Midwest. The Nightingale-in-Residence Program will offer bi-weekly virtual studio visits to residents from artists, critics, and thinkers, as well as an exhibition of the artists’ works (or a curated program by the resident). Nightingale-in-Residence will have access to Nightingale Cinema projection and audio equipment. You may apply for this program as a single artist, or as part of a two-person collaborative project or collective.
This is the second iteration of this program, and we are currently seeking funding opportunities to make this a sustainable free residency program in the future, but the Nightingale Cinema is not financially capable of creating full scholarship opportunities at this time. For fall 2021, residents will pay $200/month for the 200 sq ft basement studio, and this payment will go towards the Nightingale’s rent, utilities, and virtual studio visitors. Traditionally, the Nightingale has had four roommates living in the space, and currently there are three, so we have decided to create this project to expand the offerings of the Nightingale in lieu of taking on a fourth roommate to contribute rent. This payment will aid substantially in continuing future Nightingale programs. If you are lacking funds to pay for the studio lease, please email Nightingale Director Emily Eddy at eddykemily@gmail.com and we will add you to a short-list for future no-cost residency opportunities.

The Fine Print/Terms and Conditions
This is not a live-in residency opportunity and is only available for Chicago-area residents age 18+. Wet materials (paint, ceramics, etc.) are not available for use in our space. Three roommates live in the space, and the residency studio is an additional bedroom in the building. Artists will have access to the studio from 8am-11pm, unless overnight access is arranged. The Nightingale will provide basic necessities including desks, some furniture, and some storage. Tech needs may be met on a basis of availability, although computers and software will not be provided. Due to the ongoing pandemic, guests other than studio visitors arranged by Nightingale staff will need to be scheduled at least 2 days in advance. Masks will be worn in the main space (outside of the studio room). We will be collecting voluntary demographic information in the application to aid in potential future funding and grant opportunities for the residency program.
Accessibility
Nightingale Cinema is committed to being open and accessible to most artists. We are eager to work with you directly to meet your needs. The studio is located on the second floor of the building, and unfortunately, there is no elevator or ramp. The main entrance of the cinema is wheelchair accessible, but the restrooms are not wheelchair accessible. There is one restroom on the first floor, and one restroom up a short set of stairs from the studio on the second floor. We are prepared to produce or facilitate accommodations such as large print materials or similar accommodations, and any other actions that our volunteer staff are reasonably able to fulfill. Service animals can be accommodated on a case-by-case basis. All service animals must have up-to-date paperwork and a current vet check and flea treatment. Street parking is available on Milwaukee Ave., Noble St., and Augusta St. For early morning or overnight visits, make sure to obey street cleaning parking rules so as not to get ticketed.
Your contact for questions or to request accessibility accommodations is Nightingale Cinema’s Director Emily Eddy (eddykemily@gmail.com).
